Quiz 1           Quiz 2            Quiz 3         Quiz 4         Quiz 5

Quiz #4 - Cognates ?

All words are grouped into families, usually with very clearly lineages.  Many words often resemble each other, but they are not always related.  Words which do share a common root/origin are called cognates.  My linguist buddy, Pericles, and I send each other text messages about cognates, and this quiz takes its inspiration from that.   In each question, the words either (yes) share some common etymological root, or (no) they are unrelated.  Some words may only share a common syllable, in which case that element is placed in bold.   Source of answers is etymonline.com , a.k.a the OED on a budget  (Oxford English Dictionary).
